Does God exist? Is there some being out there that is greater than me or this earth or this universe?

By the definition of I God I mean a supreme being who is perfect. By definition this being is above the bounds of the universe in which I live.

So, Is there a god?

My initial belief is yes, there is a god.

The universe had a beginning. Modern science agrees that there is some point in the past in which things began. If the universe did not have a beginning then the history of the universe would have to stretch into infinity. In more simple terms time has a linear direction. It passes from one time to the next. If there was no beginning to the universe then time must have been going on infinitely before this present period. 

Now, with this idea of an infinite beginning there lies a serious problem. Just as you can’t count down from infinity to zero you can’t count up to zero from negative infinity. Infinity is a never-ending number which you can’t begin a count. Because we know time moves in this linear way and there exists a present, or a “zero” then the past cannot stretch back into infinity or else there would exist no present. Therefore the universe must have a beginning.

Okay so the universe has a beginning. There was a point in which there was nothing and then there was a point in which there was something. The question is, how did this come to be?

The universe is so incredibly complex. Things just work together. Trees provide oxygen and need CO2. I breath out CO2 and need oxygen. The sun is the perfect distance away to provide life so that the earth doesn’t burn up or is incredibly cold. Organisms themselves are beings of incredible complexity. The eye of a human is more technologically advanced than anything we have currently.

But there are also other aspects of the universe that are incredible. I need food to eat and be nourished but it is also pleasing to me. The smell of a cheeseburger or pepperoni pizza is incredible. They are pleasing to eat.

The relationship between men and women is incredible. There is physical attraction to the other which sets off a pool of chemicals and hormones that create a myriad of emotions. However there is also something deeper. Between a couple there is a special bond, a connection. There is an intimate sharing of emotional and physical experiences that are between two people. How did this ever come to be?

The universe is so incredibly amazing. It’s awe inspiring and breathtaking. Did it all emerge from a “Big Bang” or the millions of patient years of evolution?

I believe it didn’t . The universe is too wonderfully put together for it all simply to happen by the chance of a bang which sent matter flying into all directions which somehow formed into planets and stars which somehow aligned in such a way to allow for life to exist which somehow was put together with such complexity to emerge as it does today. That is a long string of “which somehows”. It is far more likely that there was a creator. The universe is too well created. It shows the markings of intelligent design at every level and in every place.

As to the evolution theory there lie two problems. The first is that evolution does not explain the beginnings of the universe. The second is that there are serious flaws in the evolutionary timeline. There are huge gaps in the fossil record. There has been no archeological evidence of transitional organisms. If we all came from apes and it took millions of years for us to evolve one would think that there would be millions of fossils to dig up that would show the markings of this evolution. However, there have been none. What has been discovered has been either apes or people, no in-between. There have only been hoaxes which have been disproved.

The more I see the more the evidence suggests that there must be a creator. It is far more likely that there was a creator than the universe exploded into being or evolved from something that came from nothing.

No, there is a creator.

Now because there exists a creator and the universe had a beginning then the creator must be outside of the bounds of time. In order to be the creator of a universe that had a beginning then he must be outside of time. He (I use “he” as a convention) must be timeless with no beginning but must have always been.

Also because he is the creator of the universe he is not held by any of the rules we are. Everything we live in and everything we are is created. He made it. And because he made it he is not held by it. He must be above it.

Lastly, from my last post I introduced the idea of a good and evil. Because we are created beings then the internal moral compass was also created. God instilled in us a knowledge of what is right and wrong. That is a curious notion. Why would he put that sense of good into us? Why do we feel guilty when we do wrong?These are questions for the next post.

Do I believe in a creator? Yes. Do I believe in God? Yes.

    Excellent bro!

    I often wonder why people thinks it’s irrational to believe in the Creator God, an uncaused being. They say, logically, he must have came from something. But that goes back to infinity. Some say that nothing could be outside of time, infinite, etc. But, to some, it is rational to think that energy has been around for an infinite amount of time, and that energy somehow randomly created all. So we could play the, “well where did that energy come from,” question.

    Great stuff though, keep seeking the Lord with it all, it’s coming along great. Praise God!

    I believe in a god too. Your posts however have started my own series of questions I am trying to answer. I can completely agree with your first post about good and evil and it definitely has me conviced. In your lastest post, I have a comment to make about a statement you made in the beginning. You said how we can’t count from negative infinity to zero and that everything has a beginning. I must question that because if there is no negative infinity, there is no infinity, which is supposively how long God’s reign is. And even if negative infinity does not exist and everything has a beginning, then doesn’t God have a beginning? Because you are saying if there is no negative infinity God must have a beginning as well. And so, how do you think God was made?

    Just some food for thought.

    I’m glad you enjoyed my first post about good and evil. On the subject of God you have some excellent points. These are good questions. The concept of things which are infinite is difficult to grasp and even though I wrote this post I have difficulty completely understanding it.

    One of my first remarks regarding infinity is meant to show that the universe must have a beginning. My explanation was an argument which I discovered through a website while doing my research. The link to the argument is: http://www.existence-of-god.com/first-cause-argument.html

    To start off there is the idea of infinity. A place which can never be reached because it goes on forever.
    Pretend that you’re counting numbers. You can count from five to seven: 5 6 7. This is possible because five and seven are both definite points which end.
    Now pretend you are going to count from five to infinity: 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21………… You would have to keep going and going. Eventually you would reach 1,000,000 and even 1,000,000,000 and even 1,000,000,000,000 but you would never reach infinity because it keeps going and going and going forever.

    Okay so think about this same situation in reverse. What if you were counting down from infinity to five? Because you could never reach infinity in the first place there is no number to start that would be infinity if you wanted to go backwards. You couldn’t simply start at 1,000,000,000,000 and count down because infinity stretches beyond that. So it’s impossible to count from infinity to five.

    That also means that it’s impossible to count from negative infinity up to five. Because negative infinity stretches back into forever there is no number at which you can start.

    Alright so we’ll apply this concept to the universe. If the past were infinite then you could never be in the present. The past would stretch out forever and it would not be possible to make it to the present because you would be stuck in going through the infinity of the past.

    So this means that the only logical explanation is that the universe has a beginning. A point at which it began to exist.

    This also bring your question that if I claim that everything has a beginning then doesn’t God have a beginning?
    Your right. If I say that everything has a beginning then God would have to have a beginning.
    Does everything have a beginning? Yes and no.
    I believe that the universe has a beginning and everything in it. However I believe that God does not have a beginning.
    To be clear I do not believe God is not a part of the universe. He created and he made it but he is not bound by it or a part of it.

    In order to be the creator of the universe which had a beginning God would have to have no beginning. As you say if God did have a beginning then God would have to have been made in some way. I agree with you there is a problem with this idea, because if someone made God then who made that someone?

    However I don’t believe that God is even bound by time. He created it.
    He has no beginning and no end because he doesn’t have to worry about time. He was and always is and always will be. So no one made God. He always existed.

    I think that we as finite people will never be able to completely grasp the full understanding of God. He is infinite and we are not. He knows everything and we only know a limited amount of information. He can be everywhere at every time yet we are bound by one place at one time.

    I hope this helps with some of your questions. I see a lot of good pondering in the things which you asked.

  4. Interesting thougths Christian. I had the same question as Some Girl. But you answered it well.

    Why does the universe have to have a designer? If it were to evolve, wouldn’t evolution likely occur in a way that works rather than a form that doesn’t? Even though the eye is an incredible thing, couldn’t it have evolved that way without having a designer?

    Also, if all things were created by a designer, why do some animals or parts of us reflect a design that is not efficient? It seems that if there was a god he would make things perfect or at least ideal. But there are many ways that science has proven that the current design of some things is far from ideal. How would you respond?

    I must assist Christian in this agruement. I have browsed through the websites you posted and the agruement that struck me the most interesting is why the panda does not have opposable thumbs. Evolution may be the most sensible answer to that creature and some other creatures, but still I must ask questions like:
    - How can birds navigate over thousands of miles of ocean and never get lost?
    -How do great whales dive to the bottom of the ocean without the pressure causing them to implode?
    -How do Emperor Penguins go two and a half months without eating or drinking?
    -How does a giraffe get a drink without causing lethal blood pressure to his brain?

    How can these questions be answered without a creator? I especially find the giraffe’s situation interesting because, as I was reading, if evolution was true the giraffe would not be here today. Every part the giraffe is needed for it to be alive, meaning evolution could not have happened to each part at different times. Here you can look further on that topic:

    But back to the Panda, if we conclude there is a creator, we also know that nothing besides God is perfect. So, I believe the Panda doesn’t have opposable thumbs simply because nothing besides God is perfect.

    Even with humans is it simply evolutions chance that every part of the body depends of some other parts function? How was the heart evolved if there wasn’t blood? Or if blood was “evolved” first, then what function did it have in the body without a heart or other organs for it to run through?

    My examples may not be in dept, but hopfefully they shows my feelings on this topic.
